I managed to figure that out after I sent the email.  What confused me was that for 1 and 2 TB drives fdisk -l says the drives are:

Device     Boot Start        End    Sectors  Size Id Type
/dev/sdc1  *     2048 3907029166 3907027119  1.8T  7 HPFS/NTFS/exFAT

for 4 and 8 TB drives dfisk -l shows

Device      Start         End     Sectors  Size Type
/dev/sdd1      34      262177      262144  128M Microsoft reserved
/dev/sdd2  264192 15628052479 15627788288  7.3T Microsoft basic data

so I assumed (incorrectly) FAT.  It was only afterwards that I thought NTFS.

Oh well, live and learn :-)

Hi Paolo,

If you have not started using the drive yet and your are not
going to share it with Windows or Mac, you can wipe the
drive (gparted --> device -> create partition table) and
set it to GPT (XP can't read GPT.) and ext4. You will
love the results.
