went through the standard Xfce printer setup and connected to my HP

But I want to use the scanner, like I have set up on my old F28 system,
so I have installed hplip-gui, xsane, and such and started hplip-gui.
It is telling me I have no HP printers installed.
I went through localhost:631 and installed the printer again. It now shows there as well.
HPlip-gui still not seeing the printer.
What might I be missing here?
FWIW, I've always had great success if I've installed HP printers using the "hp-setup"
utility.
Also, when it comes to network printers I have found it best to use "manual" as the
discovery method as the auto doesn't always work.
Particularly when the printer is on a different subnet!
