Everything you've said indicates the annoying issues are related to the "Approach"
application.

You will recall that I mentioned that "default" settings for any device will be the
settings used in the *absence* of an application specifying the setting and value.  So,
making changes to the "default" values of the printer are not going to have any effect if
the application sets (overrides) the default.
