I always reinstall for that very reason. Plus I've worked out a great way to do it: Install a virtual machine, guestmount it, then rsync the disk image to the real partition I'm going to run on. Edit a few files like grub.cfg and fstab, and you can boot into it with a grub entry that uses the configfile directive, then install grub for real.
