You say you're not getting a Login GUI and you say nothing is set for auto-login.  It
just boots to a blank screen.  With that being the case, I can't for the life of me
think how this can be in the logs you've posted.

Although this is "wrong" since you've said you've removed all gnome bits it should
not affect things.  I found that on a pure KDE system if you login with that info it
will just overwrite the info for the Session with plasma.desktop and bring up KDE.
Also, even if I have bogus entries in the xsession directory it will find that the
Session isn't valid and bring up KDE.

OK, now you are confusing me....

You say....  "because I do not use the Gnome desktop nor do I interactively select it
at the login screen".  But I asked if you get a Login GUI and you've said no.  Now
you talk of a login screen.

So?

Anyway....   What do you have in /usr/share/xsessions with all of the "gnome bits"
removed.

The feeling I'm getting is that while you think you've removed all of the gnome bits
you really haven't and sddm thinks the default DE is GNOME.

I suppose I may try

dnf group remove "Fedora Workstation"

IDK What to say Ed.. those are my configs and my logs.. no auto login, and booted to a black screen with everything that I know of so far pointing to sddm and plasma.desktop.  Makes no sense.

And what sucks is that when I look at a log entry like:
Jan 25 19:50:19 Vostok sddm-helper[1937]: Starting: "/etc/X11/xinit/Xsession \"env
GNOME_SHELL_SESSION_MODE=classic gnome-session --session gnome-classic\""

That makes me think it's trying to start gnome-classic.  Except it's not!  I login to a plasma DE...

And regarding the state.conf file under sddm.  Yeah I agree that SHOULD be wrong.  The bit I know about how this all works suggests that if I boot up, then interactively choose a DE that file should be modified to the DE that I choose to login to.  Except that's not happening.

You say....  "because I do not use the Gnome desktop nor do I interactively select it
at the login screen".  But I asked if you get a Login GUI and you've said no.  Now
you talk of a login screen.

So?

This means simply that when I login, meaning when I am forced to reset my DM config back to gnome.service and I am able to successfulyl login I am using Plasma.desktop, Not and Gnome DE.  If I change the symlink to look at any DM outside of gnome now I get a black cursorless screen. And since this is my work laptop I can't leave it in a crippled state while I trouble shoot.

So what are you saying there at the end? If I think Im removing gnome stuff but really not. Since GDM seems to have to depend upon every other stinking park of gnome I'm really not sure what would be left to interfere with SDDM. Should I re-try removing teh gnome stuff and this time manually change sddm/state.conf to plasma.desktop?
