I have never directly used my hdhomeruns, I have always used mythtv to
manage them.

Setting up mythtv may be more work than you want, but once it gets
setup for the most part the magic just works, and for the most part
mine has kept working over years of upgrades.

I have one dual hdhomerun and 2 single channel hdhomeruns.  I also
seem to remember having to upgrade the hdhomerun firmware to correct
some issues.
