Re: HP Intel i5-8250U laptop - No audio

Ok, some updates... If I plug earbuds into the headphone jack it works fine. When playing a wav file using aplay, everything VISUALLY works (gui meters go up and down).

It looks like a problem with the Realtek ALC295 chipset support. Some people had "crackling" audio which could be fixed by making certain settings but I haven't found a definitive fix for no audio...

I found a site that suggested adding a options to the kernel module in /etc/modprobe.d/

# cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
options snd-hda-intel model=auto

And that seems to have fixed it! Of course that makes one wonder, should "auto" be the default (i.e., no manual configuration).

There is one other possibility. Windows can leave the card in a funky state so I did do a hard power off before getting the sound to work. It's getting too late tonight but I'll try removing the modprobe file and see if audio continues to work.

Thanks,
Richard
