So, this is an older system where the owner does not wish to upgeade.

So I thought I would try and install TB from a downloaded rpm:

yum -y install thunderbird-38.0.1-2.fc20.x86_64.rpm
Loaded plugins: langpacks, refresh-packagekit
Examining thunderbird-38.0.1-2.fc20.x86_64.rpm: thunderbird-38.0.1-2.fc20.x86_64

cpio rename????? Since when did cpio fail to rename something?

$ rpm -q cpio
cpio-2.11-28.fc20.x86_64

This has never been a problem I even re-installed cpio

without any problems. but installing TB still fails with this error.

At the verge of giving up, but still willing to hear from others

about this issue.

It's a good point. I did find other people reporting
the same problem, but the explanations for the problem
were not only inadequate, but also not applicable, as
there was no other process of TB running.

OK, at least we know that your directories and files aren't read only, so we cross that possibility off.  And, I presume that you own them because I'd have expected you to mention it if you didn't.  That's what I expected, but I didn't want us to spend days trying to work out what's wrong only to find that it was something easy like this.  Good.

As I told a caller once when I was doing tech support, "Much of troubleshooting consists of going down one blind ally after another until one of them isn't."
