Ohh, it must never happen then. From the person who used to triage the
bugs from when it did, please trust me that offline updates has
reduced the number of trashed systems by three orders of magnitude.
I too have updated my desktop many times over the years with no trouble.
However, it's rare for me to do a system upgrade that doesn't get
munged, leaving me to clean up dupes from a CLI, and using my laptop
(which doesn't have trouble upgrading) to stay on line. Having spent
years doing tech support for an ISP, I'm not going to argue with your
experience, but I'd like to point out that you only heard about the
cases where it went wrong, so there might be a bit of selection bias
going on.
