Yeah, I'm hip. I'm _fairly_ certain it's lxdm that's at fault. There are a lot of things on the web regarding this issue. If you get a chance, you might try using lightdm as the display manager and see if that buys you anything. Although the OP just wanted to see if LXQt would work on an old laptop he had. I don't think it's critical, but it would be nice to know what it is.
