ICBW, but I was under the impression that the OP wanted to capture any error output from ssh itself and wasn't concerned with errors at the other end.
You don't have to take my word for it. You can test this. In all cases, stderr from the remote side is written to the local "stderr" file.
I would have tested this before posting if I had a box to use as the target for ssh; as I'm retired, I don't. That's why I made it plain that my suggestion was untested.
