Thanks for the pointer.  When I did use gdm and gnome I did
encounter the flicker problem described in the bug report.
As mate was not experiencing the flicker I did not attribute
it to the same problem.

When I reboot the laptop I'll check the /etc/environment file
mentioned in the bug report.
