When I run gnome-tweak-tool I get:

This is probably due to the fact that I'm running Mate and not Gnome Shell.
Under the Power section there is the text "When Laptop Lid is Closed".
Below this it says "Don't suspend on lid close". There is a slider
switch to right of this, but it doesn't tell me what the current state
is. The switch is set to the left which I assume means it is in the off
position and therefore on lid close the system should suspend.

Recently the mate-screensaver has failed to run

I'm an Xfce user, but check your desktop settings and verify that
the screen saver and idle settings are what you think they are. There

meaning the same thing with some recent packages (for example, mouse
settings under vim). Also check the logs for messages relating to this
for clues.
