Please be specific when asking for help such as the kernel version and
version numbers of things you think might be related (in your case,
the MATE version, Wayland or Xorg, etc.) "Latest updates" doesn't mean
much when updates are released as often as they are. Your "latest" may
not be the same as my "latest" unless we did it at exactly the same
time and from the same mirrors.

I'm an Xfce user, but check your desktop settings and verify that
the screen saver and idle settings are what you think they are. There
has been a number of issues with default settings being changed or not
meaning the same thing with some recent packages (for example, mouse
settings under vim). Also check the logs for messages relating to this
for clues.
