That's the one part of this that I wouldn't have thought to be a
problem. The ISO image being streamed to the disc has the beginning,
the middle, and the end, of everything that needs to go onto the disc.
It's bootblock, files, and filesystem, all in one huge lump.
It's the same concept as using dd to write a prepared system to a hard
drive, you dump the entire contents to the media, with the contents
having already being prepared in the right way.
According to what I read in the wodim man page, finalizing also includes
writing the TOC for the disc which is not part of the ISO image. Also:
