In some cases you need to replace failed hardware with the same model, which might be difficult to do. MD raid is very hardware agnostic. Unless you buy high end gear you may end up using effectively proprietary software raid. The two main advantages of hardware raid are that it can be shared with Windows and there may be less traffic on your bus.
