I don't use Gnome but IIRC gvfs-mtp is a user-level facility. I don't
see how it would relate to the kernel not registering plug/unplug
events.

Beats the hell out of me. All I know is that it's not the kernel (since
booting into an older kernel doesn't work either) and this did work in
F21 and my phone on the same cable in the same port is recognized just
like before.
