Yes, it may not be right that they're surprised, if there was a lot of discussion, but that is the reality. I've been in the volunteer arena numerous times; every time, it's ended in exhaustion, firm decision never again--and then I'm back. Volunteer organizations will use you and drain you; for some reason, we always come back. I think either new material explaining exactly why systemd is needed, and good, is critical. If it already exists, collected pointers are just as good (if not better).
