This is an updated system as of yesterday and yum downloaded a new 3.17
kernel this morning but has not been booted yet of course.

I guess it's safe enough to reboot now and start the new kernel? Will do
that unless advised otherwise.
$ rpm -q kernel
kernel-3.17.1-202.fc20.x86_64
$ uname -r
3.17.1-202.fc20.x86_64
This kernel?
Not yet:
[root@box10 bobg]# uname -a
Linux box10 3.16.4-200.fc20.x86_64 #1 SMP Mon Oct 6 12:57:00 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It looks like yum just installed 3.16.6-200.fc20 which I have yet to boot.
Yes, from the log: Oct 18 03:18:24 Installed: kernel-3.16.6-200.fc20.x86_64
