basically forever. The printout does come out, and the
print queue goes empty.

Is this normal? Is it a problem with the printer? Is it
a problem with cups?

Tell us more about this "ipp printer" of yours. Does it stand alone on your network? Or does it attach to another computer on your network that must share it?

I had no end of problems using a shared printer, before finally I installed a printer that stood alone on the network. Many times the sharing computer would lose the job.
I have used both standalone and shared (by windows or linux) without any problems. When using a shared printer, I just had to make sure that the user sending the print
job was authorized on the printer server.
