I can understand that.  I still wonder if the sensor is mechanical, or
optical.  I've had optical sensors that fail when ambient light is too
much for them (just try servicing VCRs under bright light, and you have
to cover optical sensors up to get the deck to do anything, likewise for
people trying to use some VCRs in daylight).

It is electro-mechanical. No opticals involved at all.
