Hi Ben,

For low-end systems it can also be worth switching to XDM:

     https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XDM_(display_manager)

     yum info xorg-x11-xdm
     Description : X.Org X11 xdm - X Display Manager

I suspect that XDM is less likely to be unexpectedly "tweaked"
by future desktop developments. :-)

Yes. Removing gnome-shell (and thus gdm) and starting MATE from runlevel 3
with 'startx' works fine too..that is my current solution and is good
enough for me.

GDM on non-accel video cards has other issues too..we don't see the mouse
cursor much of the time..though if you wiggle it around widgets are highlighted
occasionaly as you get lucky and can be clicked.

Seems to me that gdm should use some standard 2D graphics logic so
that it works OK on non-accel graphics systems. GDM is the first thing
many users are going to see, and to have it suck from the very beginning
makes one suspect everything else is broken as well.

Thanks,
Ben
