Yes. Removing gnome-shell (and thus gdm) and starting MATE from runlevel 3 with 'startx' works fine too..that is my current solution and is good enough for me. GDM on non-accel video cards has other issues too..we don't see the mouse cursor much of the time..though if you wiggle it around widgets are highlighted occasionaly as you get lucky and can be clicked. Seems to me that gdm should use some standard 2D graphics logic so that it works OK on non-accel graphics systems. GDM is the first thing many users are going to see, and to have it suck from the very beginning makes one suspect everything else is broken as well.
