Much of what made Windows and MS Office so popular was their consistent "Look and Feel." Learn one, you were close to learning all. Now, of course, with their New! Shiny! ribbon interface they've abandoned what was once one of their best selling points, and I don't think some of the Linus DEs are doing themselves a favor by following them blindly down that path. Experimenting with new ways is good, but the new way should, IMO, start out as an option, not the default.
