could mean a lot of extra work to particularly learn a new
system. Time which you can't use for something useful.

Do you even know what you are talking about here? LibreOffice is a fork of OpenOffice that occured while Oracle was sitting on OpenOffice for ages without publishing any releases or accepting any patches from the developers, who in turn got fed up and jumped ship and forked OpenOffice to LibreOffice. Nowdays most patches from one find their way to the other and the two are near identical in functionality, appearance and file formats they support. The main difference you're likely to see is the splash screen.

It's a non-issue, and a cosmetic/philosophical one at that.
