When you "ssh -X tao" you get connected to tao *but* you are connected to the X server on ethos! So, the xrandr is returning information on and is acting on the X server on ethos. You need to go to the console of tao to make the changes. -- Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots.
