By default I get sound through the headphones and not though the speakers. If I create /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf, with contents options snd-hda-intel model=imac27 I get the opposite - sound on the speakers but not on the headphones. In both cases, nothing I do with alsamixer -c 0 makes any difference to the other output. This is on a new imac, with an up to date F17.
