For instance I would like to list: date/time, SRC=192.168.1.9,
DST=169.229.70.201
That should give me a starting point on which I can expand on the
information extracted/displayed.

grep ^Aug /var/log/messages | awk '{print $1" "$2" "$3" "$9" "$10}'

Thank you Kevin. That's what I need to get started, I can muddle
along from there.
As it is it prints some interesting stuff. Of course it's all in the
log but it's handy to have it in a reduced, uncluttered form.
