problem, and that is a bit too detailed for me.
To really know if the kernel is still somehow active, try the following
when it hangs:
CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-s
CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-u
CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-o
The "s" syncs stuff to disk, you should hear a bit of disk activity (if
you don't have an SSD). The "o" should cause your machine to poweroff.
If above keys do not have any effect, then it is very likely something
in your hardware causing a failure (not guaranteed to be that though).
