To really know if the kernel is still somehow active, try the following when it hangs: CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-s CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-u CTRL-ALT-SYSRQ-o The "s" syncs stuff to disk, you should hear a bit of disk activity (if you don't have an SSD). The "o" should cause your machine to poweroff.
