Well, as I said, updating your system probably won't help, so if you'd rather not take the risk of b0rking something, don't worry about it. And, if it's only affecting Gnome 3, that limits the possible culprits. Alas, I don't use Gnome any more, but at least I helped block off some blind alleys. (I take it, BTW, that simply switching to a different DE isn't an option.)
