We geeks are used to having updates occasionally break things; it is the price we pay for running bleeding edge software. But my wife doesn't always see it that way, so I try not to update her machine unless there is a specific reason to do so. Example: a recent kernel update caused wireless on my laptop to stop working reliably. There were bugzillas about the issue and I think it was even discussed on this list. I have one Vaio laptop that is still booting a 3.1 kernel because I'm not sure exactly where the bug was introduced or when and if it's been fixed. It works fine with XFCE, the problem only occurs with Gnome3.
