Actually, I managed to get google sync working after re-setting my Android 2.3.3 phone (Settings=>Privacy=>Factory data reset). I guess my phone had got into a funny state, probably because of something I did. I've even yum-installed akonadi-googledata, and got my Google contacts into KMail/KAddressBook. I've found the Android learning curve rather steep, though very rewarding.
