For me, this did the trick:

cd /etc/fonts/conf.d/
ln -s ../conf.avail/10-autohint.conf .

Also if you "yum install dconf-editor" you can poke
around in org.gnome.desktop.interface and modify
things like gtk-theme, cursor-theme, default font, etc.

I've almost got my system back to where I no longer
want to puke :-).
