My apologies Burkhard, I confused your email with another I am also
helping out with. Please ignore the response I just posted and let me
try again. Thank-you.

Well, to begin with you are using the VESA driver, which is rarely
useful. What is your video card actually? A better driver may give you
a better selection of video modes. Have you tried deleting your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file (or at least temporarily renaming it) and
restart Xorg without it. Looking at the whole log file from that
attempt will probably be very enlightening.

In the meantime, look further into your current Xorg.0.log file. The
EDID stuff is *very* noticeable down near the end of the initialization
and setup. (Search for EDID). You should see both a HEX dump of it,
and Xorg's interpretation of it, if it is working right. I find it hard
to believe that a Flat Panel Display doesn't return *any* EDID
information upon a query. But, I could be wrong, and frequently am.

What is your video card? "lspci | grep VGA" should give you some
indication of what hardware is installed. Based on that response, we
can determine if VESA is the right video driver for you (not likely
based on what you've said so far). It may be the case that you need to
install a better xorg_x11_drv_xxxxxx driver for your video card.
(Gawd, if it would only be that simple!)

The whole thing is always better, as you won't delete parts that people
may want to look at. It is also useful to see what EErrors Xorg may
have found during initialization.
