KDE does offer a "safely remove" option. When you click on it, it very 
briefly replaces the USB icon with a checkmark to let you know that you 
may safely remove the device. You have to look sharp; the effect lasts 
about five seconds. Then again, it assumes that you are ready to pull 
the device out immediately.
