	I can't speak to KDE, but Gnome does -- sometimes. I right-click
on the disk icon, and the resulting menu often includes an item for
"Safely remove ..."

When I click that, the icon disappears. A release or three ago,
it used to also put up a message after a little while, on or near the
bottom panel, saying I could now remove it. That notification seems to
have gone the way of the tumbleweed.

I have precious (very precious!) little idea where up is.
