It should work to dd it > to the whole device. Using the partition won't work. > The whole device. It works just fine with hard drive images, but the MBR is blank (all zeros) when using a CD image. It will work if you can convince the BIOS that it is a USB CD drive, or if you have an image that was designed to boot as a hard drive.
