I have only used it for keyboard shortcuts. I have never tried
combining it with mouse keys. You may be able to set it up using
gnome-config (I may have the name wrong.)

I am not sure what you are after, but you do not have/want to use
the center button, you can use the left and right buttons at the
same time in place of the middle button...
