Michael:
Thanks for pointing out the rootnoverify command. I'd never understood
its purpose, but your note prompted me to actually the RTFM at
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub.html, and all is now well.
In short, I am now chainloading a partition using grub 2 from a legacy
grub installation.
