I'm trying to install Fedora 9 on a Dell Optiplex box, after the
'starting anaconda' message I get this:

ValueError: Invalid object path 'org/freedestop/Hal/devices/

install exited abnormally [1/1]

Is it possible this is a typo in the install script. Shouldn't that be org/freedesktop/Hal instead of freedestop. If it is, maybe you could skip the device and set it up later.

The error seems to be saying there is a path that isn't root ( / ) and is not valid.

Pure speculation.
