Because, you know, GNU/Linux isn't a trademark, and GNU/Linux(R) makes it seem like it is. Then, if someone asks what the kernel is, we can explain that we'd really like to give them credit, because we're really not like them, but the trademark terms are too cumbersome. Or we can go the "Linux(R) is a registered trademark" dance.
