even being usb powered, i would think it would have a fuse. and if not
a fuse, there may be a low ohm/watt resistor or possible a blocking
diode used for fuse.

i do not believe cannon would be that cheap. tho one never knows.

carefully slide a thin knife blade along area where covers fit together
should revile any snap locks.

and like you say, you can not do any more harm other than a crack or two
in case. acetone or mek [methyl ethyl ketone] are good solvents to use
for repair.
