If the lmhosts file is blank, or doesn't have the answer it seeks, Samba uses other methods. The lmhosts file is really only useful if your addresses are static, or something else manages changing the lmhosts file to keep in step. When it's correctly written, it simply gives Samba a fast local answer for machine name resolution. -- (This computer runs FC7, my others run FC4, FC5 & FC6, in case that's important to the thread.)
