It would appear that on Feb 9, Tim did say:

Well I'm glad to here that it's not just my system that has this problem...

Still I wonder if there is an command line method to call the logout
routine... If so I could put it in a script with a short name like "L"
and call it from the run prompt. ( <alt>+<F2> L <enter> ) doesn't sound
easier to a mouse centric user than simply clicking on system and
selecting the bottom choice. But for a keyboard centric user like me with
poor mouse pointer coordination, it would be much less irritating than
starting with <alt>+<F1>, Moving sideways to system... etc... And not
much more work than a hotkey that worked...

Hmmnnn On my kubuntu install (which I'm using at the moment)
<alt>+<F2> logout <enter> does in fact call the logout function.
though a 'which logout' doesn't find the executable and the bash built-in
logout command isn't quite what I'm trying to use...

If I can't find the pathname of this logout function I can't call it
from a script named 'L' <sigh> But next time I boot FC8 I'll have to try
typing logout at the run prompt. cause even with the extra 5 keystrokes
it's still easier for me than _HAVING_ to use the freaking <alt>+<F1>
menu to get there... Here's hoping that works on FC8... ;)
