He, being used to that, actually liked it that way. It meant he could try something, see if it worked, and only then (having presumably kept good notes) go into grub.conf or menu.lst and put the changes that worked where they *would* take.

Seems strange to me; but it sounds as if it might have something to do with the troubles you're describing.

This is true - the edits done at the Grub prompt, or made to individual lines in the menu from within Grub are only temporary. This lets you handle problems when you need to things one time only. Things like booting into the single user mode, changing the root directory, or booting from a disk that is not normally attached.

This has nothing to do with the OPs problem. But don't let that bother you - it was a good thought.
