The standard is a straight through cable for things that are supposed to be connected together (e.g. computer to a switch or hub) and cross-overs to things being directly connected together that would normally go through something else (e.g. computers directly together). I wouldn't expect any device to "expect" the wrong type of cable according to the *usual* ways of cabling things.
