  i've never noticed this process before, and it may have come along
when i recently installed vlc, but npviewer.bin:

$ locate npviewer.bin
/usr/lib/nspluginwrapper/npviewer.bin

has a nasty habit of sucking up gobs of CPU. according to top, it can
be using anywhere from 25-45% of the CPU if i'm just browsing a web
page with an embedded youtube video. mind you, i'm not even
*watching* the video, there's just one embedded in the page somwehere,
and a chunk of my CPU goes bye bye.

  is this normal? is anyone else seeing this?

It wraps browser plugins, so it is the plugin (Adobe flash) that is using your CPU cycles.
