Ed, this doesn't help me as X comes up OK, but after a logout out it
tries to start in a different manner, and then is when it fails.
OK... Maybe you can see if things change if you disable loading of the DRI
module in your xorg.conf file?
How are modlues loaded in newer versions of Xorg? I don't see any
modules in xorg.conf.
