I don't know if you are overlooking anything...but have a suggestion that
may get you around the issue.

Why not change your FC5 installation to not use a mounted /tmp partition
since that partition won't have anything updated anyway.  Then after the
upgrade manually add /tmp back in.  Of course, at that time the drive will
be a "scsi" device.
