Just create a file (permission 775)

/etc/sysconfig/modules/lirc.modules

and put

modprobe lirc_serial >/dev/null 2>&1

in it. In modprobe.conf, only keep

alias char-major-61 lirc_serial


Thanks. I still needed all the options in modprobe.conf, but
/etc/sysconfig/modules/lirc.modules did the trick.
